Beethoven's Ninth SymphonyWVSO Choral Rehearsals Resume

The WVSO Chorus is accepting new singers for the performances of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in April.

Rehearsals are held each Monday evening from 7:15 to 9:30 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist in Charleston. Contact  Dr. David Castleberry at castlebe@marshall.edu for further information.

Keith Brion and Sousa at the SymphonyTruly Authentic Sousa Concert with the WVSO

Performance Dates: March 19 & 20, 2010

CHARLESTON, WV - The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s 2009-2010 ZMM Pops Series continues with an exciting and patriotic concert of the best of John Philip Sousa’s marches and music with “Sousa at the Symphony” featuring Sousa master and scholar Keith Brion. 

Mr. Brion is one of the foremost Sousa experts and the leader of his own New Sousa Band.  He painstakingly researched Sousa from newspaper articles, manuscripts and interviews with former Sousa band members to create a completely unique experience that is both totally authentic and greatly entertaining.  From" Stars and Stripes Forever" (which Mr. Brion calls the greatest march ever written) to the rousing "Liberty Bell March," Mr. Brion offers listeners the complete Sousa repertoire.

West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces 2010-2011 Season 

The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra announces its 2010-2011 season with great guest performers, exciting classical works and a little bit of disco.  Artists such as world-class fiddler Mark O’Connor, pianist and WVSO audience favorite Valentina Lisitsa, and Sweden’s The Arrival performing the music of ABBA will grace the stage of the Maier Performance Hall at the Clay Center.  Overall, there are over twenty fantastic WVSO concerts for West Virginia audiences to look forward to in the upcoming year.

The 2010-2011 Season also marks Maestro Cooper’s 10th year as artistic director and conductor of the Symphony. 

The Symphonic Series kicks off on September 10, 2010 with David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Carter Brey, principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic.  Following concerts include WV audience favorite Valentina Lisitsa (October 15 & 16, 2010); violinist/fiddler Mark O’Connor (November 12 & 13, 2010); pianist Adam Golka (January 28 & 29, 2011); clarinetist Bob Turizziani and pianists Vicki Berneking and Deborah Gross (March 4 & 5, 2011); and Nancy Maultsby and John Mac Master performing Mahler’s masterwork - Das Lied von der Erde/Song of the Earth (April 15 & 16, 2011).  Symphonic Series concerts take place at 8 p.m. at the Clay Center.

Stories and Legends is a special educational concert program that showcases how seven featured composers have created powerful stories and images through the language of music. All of these orchestral works will likely be familiar to audience members of all ages.

Told through the language of music, this program showcases the power of “Music as a Storyteller.” Featured works will range from the “Star Wars Main Theme” to Copland’s “John Henry” a piece that has a strong connection to the man and the myth originating in Summers County, WV.

Concert Preparation Materials: Free student and teacher concert preparation guides (paper-based). Teacher guide will contain an audio CD companion for listening samples.

At Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church, Hurricane, WV

CHARLESTON, WV - The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra will be performing a special concert on Friday, March 26, 2010 at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church as part of its Spring "Tribute to Amadeus."  This concert features some of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s best-loved works including his famous Overture to Lucio Silla, his Symphony No. 36 in C Major (The Linz) and his Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major performed by WVSO audience favorite Corey Cerovsek.  Fresh off of touring and a recent WVSO performance in January, Mr. Cerovsek is a former child prodigy and internationally renowned violinist.
