WVSO Announces Andrew and Amy Vaughan Fellowship Winners

CHARLESTON WV –Christian Smith, from Putnam County, has been selected as the Student Symphonic Fellow in the Andrew and Amy Vaughan Fellowship Program through the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO).  Smith’s selection is the result of auditions and interviews on December 12.

As a capstone to his fellowship experience, Smith will perform a solo piano piece on the WVSO’s April symphonic concert in both Charleston and in Parkersburg.  Smith’s piano study has taken him to Interlochen Center for the Arts in 2008 and to Brevard Music Center in summer 2009.  He currently studies piano in Charleston with Victoria Berneking, and has performed in master classes with professional concert pianists Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Orli Shaham, Angela Cheng, Elizabeth Pridinoff and William Nyaho.

WVSO Announces Fantastic Fall Tour 2010
Featuring Lindsey Goodman, Flute

 

The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director Grant Cooper will embark on a special WV tour – traveling to three venues throughout the state.  This season’s Fall tour will take the Orchestra to West Virginia State University in Institute, WV, The Chuck Mathena Center in Princeton, WV; and Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane, WV.  (dates, times and ticket prices below)


Joining the Orchestra for these performances is soloist Lindsey Goodman.  Ms. Goodman is principal flute with the WVSO and will be performing the Renaissance Concerto for Flute and Orchestra by Lukas Foss.  Also on the program are George Frederic Handel’s Water Music and Maurice Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin.

WVSO's Opening Night Celebration with David Kim and Carter Brey
September 10 & 11, 2010

David KimCarter BreyThe West Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s 2010-20   11 Symphonic Series season begins with its annual “Opening Night Celebration” on Friday and Saturday, September 10 & 11, 2010.  This special concert also commemorates Artistic Director Grant Cooper’s 10th Season with the WVSO.  Both performances will take place at 8 p.m. at the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences of West Virginia.


This program features two of the world’s most renowned classical musicians: David Kim, Concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Carter Brey, Principal Cellist with the New York Philharmonic.  They will be performing Johannes Brahms’ virtuosic Double Concerto for Violin and Cello for the first time together.  Also on the program is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s whimsical Symphonic Dances.

West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces 2010-2011 Season 

The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra announces its 2010-2011 season with great guest performers, exciting classical works and a little bit of disco.  Artists such as world-class fiddler Mark O’Connor, pianist and WVSO audience favorite Valentina Lisitsa, and Sweden’s The Arrival performing the music of ABBA will grace the stage of the Maier Performance Hall at the Clay Center.  Overall, there are over twenty fantastic WVSO concerts for West Virginia audiences to look forward to in the upcoming year.

The 2010-2011 Season also marks Maestro Cooper’s 10th year as artistic director and conductor of the Symphony.
