Fall 2024: Piano Competition

Calling all WV student pianists!

Applications for the WV Symphony’s Student Piano Competition are now available. Students ages 9-22 are eligible to apply for this special event. The winner will appear as a guest soloist with the WV Symphony Orchestra at the Culture Center on November 18 as a part of the Young People’s concert series.

The deadline to apply is August 28. Auditions will take place on September 9 at the Culture Center in Charleston, WV. Please visit wvsymphony.org/piano for a list of suggested movements from selected compositions. The WV Department of Arts, Culture and History serves as stage host for this prestigious competition.

Present a concerto movement of your choice (maximum 15 minutes duration) for the competition. A list of pre-approved pieces is included below. We also welcome candidates who would like to play something not included on this list, but if so, please check with us for approval before applying.

Chopin: Piano Concerto nos. 1-2, Grand polonaise brilliante
Dvorak: Piano Concerto, op. 33
Martínez: Piano Concerto in C, G, or A
Mayer: Piano Concerto in B-flat
Mendelssohn: Piano Concerto nos. 1-2
Mozart: Piano Concerto nos. 8, 9, 11-27
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto nos. 2-3
Ravel: Piano Concerto in G
Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto nos. 1-4
Schumann, Clara: Piano Concerto, op. 7
Schumann, Robert: Piano Concerto, op. 54
