West Virginia Symphony Orchestra announces the WV Symphony Chorus to present a free, choral concert

CHARLESTON, W.VA. (4/15/23) – The WV Symphony Chorus and Marshall University Chorus will perform a spring concert, “Music of Celebration and Remembrance: An Evening of English Anthems,” at Christ Church United Methodist on Sunday, April 30th, at 7 p.m.

WV Symphony Chorus Conductor David Castleberry will lead the singers and organist Jayson through a program that features choral selections composed for royal ceremonies. This concert is free and open to the public and will last approximately one hour in length.

According to Director David Castleberry, “If you haven’t received an invitation to Westminster Abbey for the coronation of King Charles III, this concert may be the next best thing!” Castleberry adds, “Some of the finest choral music in the repertory has been written for royal occasions. This concert is a celebration of this beautiful music and we are excited to offer it as a gift to the community.”

The full program includes Handel’s “Zadok the Priest,” which has been performed at every British coronation since its composition in 1727 for King George II. Other works include C. Hubert Parry’s “I was glad,” performed at the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William, and John Tavener’s haunting “Song for Athene,” sung at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Symphony Chorus will be joined by the Marshall University Chamber Choir, who will perform “Choral Dances from Gloriana,” composed by Benjamin Britten in celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Additional works by Sir Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Charles Villiers Stanford will complete the program.
