WV Symphony announces Cancellation of First Half of the 20-21 Concert Season
/CHARLESTON, W.VA. (8/26/20) – Today, with heavy hearts, we share our decision to cancel the previously announced concerts scheduled for October through January due to continued safety concerns caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic. The hope of the WVSO is to reunite in the Clay Center for concerts February through May if possible.
Additionally, the WVSO is exploring other programming options, including live streaming, and will release details regarding events as soon as they become available.
President Joe Tackett said in regards to the cancellation; “The WV Symphony Orchestra has been incredibly fortunate to receive steadfast support from patrons and donors, as well as corporate, foundation and community partners for 81 years. Nevertheless, we anticipate these cancellations will have a tremendous impact on the finances of the orchestra, so we appreciate the ongoing support of our community.”

Q: What were the factors that influenced the decision to cancel these concerts?
A: After careful review and discussion, the WVSO announced that all previously scheduled concerts October through January have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. This cancellation represents the safest and most prudent plan to ensure the well-being of the entire community.
Q: How will the season cancellation affect musicians?
A: The WVSO is committed, alongside the WVSO’s extraordinary musicians, to creatively remain connected to the community. We are exploring other programming options, including live streaming, and will release details regarding events as soon as they become available.
Q: Which concerts of my subscription are affected?
A: Exactly half of the season has been cancelled. For Symphonic subscribers, three Symphonic concerts (scheduled for October 3, November 14, and January 9) have been cancelled with three remaining concerts scheduled for 2021. For Pops subscribers, the first two Pops concerts (scheduled for October 17 and December 5) have been cancelled with two remaining concerts scheduled for 2021. Grand series subscribers are included in both of these groups and will see five concerts cancelled, with five remaining concerts scheduled for 2021.
Q: Does this cancellation also affect The Nutcracker?

A: While the WVSO appreciates those who donate their tickets back to the Symphony during this trying time, they also understand some subscribers may want a refund for the cancelled concerts. Q: When does the WVSO anticipate resuming performances or returning to the Clay Center?
A: As of this time, the next scheduled Symphonic concert is February 6, 2021.
Q: Are the Symphony’s education programs affected as well?
A: Our partnership with Kanawha County Schools will continue through this year. The WVSO is finalizing arrangements with middle school principals for in-person and e-learning. Plans for 4th and 5th grade beginner and intermediate students include Schoology sessions.
