West Virginia Symphony Orchestra presents Around the World

CHARLESTON, W.VA. (10/31/22) – The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO) continues its 2022-23 season and Music Director search Nov. 19 with Around the World at the Clay Center in Charleston.

On Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Clay Center in Charleston, guest conductor and candidate for the WVSO’s next Music Director, Scott Woodard will lead the WVSO through a program featuring music from Strauss, Vivaldi, Okoye, and Kalinikov. The concert will open with a special appearance by the WV Symphony Chorus.

The orchestra will also welcome 2023 WV Music Hall of Fame inductee, pianist Barbara Nissman, to the stage for a performance of Prokofiev’s Concerto. Nissman is a world-renowned concert pianist as well as a proud “West Virginian by choice” having lived in Lewisburg for the past three decades. Additionally, she received the Governor’s Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award in 2020 and is a past winner of the Governor’s Distinguished Service to the Arts award.

The Elliot Foundation Symphonic Series concert is made possible by the generous support of Jackson Kelly, PLLC and Thomas Health. Concert tickets start at $13 and are available at wvsymphony.org or by calling 304.561.3570.

As part of the Music Director candidate’s week, the community will have several chances to meet and chat with Woodard, including an event at Taylor Books on Monday, Nov. 14 from 4 – 6 p.m. and several open rehearsals occurring on Thursday, Nov. 17, Friday, Nov. 18, and Saturday, Nov. 19. The WVSO will also host Batons, Bites, and Insights, a lunchtime lecture with Woodard on the Clay Center Stage on Thursday, Nov. 17 from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Attendees should please enter through Walker Theater and are encouraged to bring a bag lunch to enjoy throughout the talk.
