West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces Williamstown H.S. Student Named as Dr. James F. Dunphy Memorial Scholar

CHARLESTON, W.VA. (6/17/22) – The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the 2022 winner of the Dr. James F. Dunphy Memorial Scholarship.

Rivion Bennett, rising sophomore at Williamstown High School, successfully auditioned and interviewed for the scholarship, which offers private music lessons with a WVSO musician, the opportunity to attend WVSO rehearsals, and personal interaction with the Symphony’s Music Director candidates.

Bennett, son of Kim and Scott Bennett of Williamstown, plays tuba in the Williamstown High School band program and it interested in a exploring a career in music therapy. In ten years, he sees himself playing music for people to enrich their lives and provide mental help through music.

Of his selection, Bennett said, “I am ecstatic to be the recipient of the [Dr. James F. Dunphy Memorial] Scholarship. My family was thrilled!”

Bennett credits his success as a young tubist to his section leader Josh and Williamstown band director Jed Corra. Corra described Bennett as having a natural leadership quality which was apparent even during his first year in band. Bennett is a natural musician, and even though the tuba is his primary instrument, he has a knack for picking up other instruments and just easily figuring them out.

Four additional students auditioned in late spring: Alyssa Stump (trumpet) and Gabriel Maciera (tuba) from Williamstown High School; Michael Kestner (saxophone) from Blennerhassett Middle School; and Sophie Layman (trumpet) from Ritchie County High School.

This is the fifth year of the award honoring Dr. James F. Dunphy (1930-2011), a lifelong devotee of and advocate for classical music who lived in Parkersburg for nearly 40 years.
