West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Announces Ravenswood High School Student Named as the Dr. James F. Dunphy Memorial Scholar
/CHARLESTON, W.VA. (6/23/2026) – The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the 2026 winner of the Dr. James F. Dunphy Memorial Scholarship.
Blaine Hoff, an upcoming senior at Ravenswood High School in Jackson County successfully auditioned and interviewed for the scholarship, which offers private music lessons with a WVSO musician, the opportunity to attend WVSO rehearsals and concerts, and personal interaction the Symphony’s Music Director Maurice Cohn.
Hoff, is a trumpet player in the Ravenswood High School wind ensemble, concert band, marching band, show choir and concert choir. Dr. Scott Tignor, band director at Ravenswood High School, described Hoff’s musicianship as being marked by focus, musical intelligence, and a sincere respect for ensemble performance. He consistently sets a high standard for tone quality, preparation and professionalism. Hoff understands that excellence in music is achieved not only through individual practice, but also through collaboration and accountability within the ensemble.
Five additional finalists auditioned for the scholarship include: Lukas Mourat (violin), Cameron Coffman (trombone) and Noah Morat (violin) from Williamstown Middle/High School; Julia Fairchild (baritone saxophone) from Parkersburg High School and Sophia Richards (clarinet) from Ravenswood High School.
This is the ninth award honoring Dr. James F. Dunphy (1930-2011), a lifelong devotee of and advocate for classical music who lived in Parkersburg for nearly 40 years.
