NEW HUNTINGTON BUS SERVICE TO APRIL CONCERT AT CLAY CENTER

CHARLESTON, W.VA. (3/14/18) – The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO) invites Tri-State residents to take a bus-ride to Charleston on Saturday, April 14, to hear the WVSO perform Brahms, Sibelius and Strauss with guest artist Erik Ralske on French horn.

This special $30 offer includes transportation to and from the Clay Center in Charleston, an en-route concert talk by WVSO Principal Clarinet Bob Turizziani, a pre-concert reception, and a ticket to the “Northern Lights” concert led by WVSO Music Director Lawrence Loh.

The WVSO will perform Brahms’ Academic Overture with the West Virginia Youth Symphony, Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 2 with Ralske, and Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5. Ralske is Principal Horn with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and one of the country’s premiere horn players.

The bus will begin loading at 5:15 p.m. at the 5th Street Park & Ride stop in Huntington and departs at 5:30. WVSO President Joe Tackett said the WVSO plans to offer this package deal at least twice a season, perhaps more, depending on interest.

“We hope that by leaving the driving to us, music lovers can enjoy the transformational power of live orchestral music without the headaches of getting to Charleston and back home on their own,” Tackett said. “Having Bob join riders to talk about the music that will be featured in the concert is an added plus.”

JURASSIC PARK: MOVIE WITH LIVE ORCHESTRA ON MARCH 17

CHARLESTON, W.VA. (3/9/18) Welcome to Jurassic Park! Enter the land of dinosaurs and join the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra as they bring the classic Jurassic Park to life by accompanying the full-length feature film on March 17, at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of WV.

Following the popularity of shows such as The Wizard of Oz and Blue Planet, Jurassic Park: Movie with Live Orchestra, presents the original full-length film on the big screen, with the sounds of the orchestra filling the hall to accompany the picture.

Audiences have two chances to catch this awe-inspiring performance at 1:00 & 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. Tickets for the two performances begin at $17 and can be purchased by visiting wvsymphony.org or by calling the Box Office at 304.561.3570. Discount rates are available for groups of 10 or more by calling the Clay Center Box Office.

JAMES F. DUNPHY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR PARKERSBURG-AREA STUDENTS

CHARLESTON, W.VA. (2/22/18) – Instrumental students in Wood and surrounding counties are invited to apply for a new scholarship that offers private music lessons with a West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (WVSO) musician, invitations to WVSO rehearsals and personal interactions with Music Director Lawrence Loh.

The Dr. James F. Dunphy Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the late James Dunphy (1930-2011), a lifelong devotee of and advocate for classical music who lived in Parkersburg for nearly 40 years. Dr. Dunphy worked as a research scientist for DuPont, and studied music as a passion and hobby.

Applications for the fall 2018 scholarship selection are open to students in grades 8 through 11 in Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt and Wood counties and are available online at wvsymphony.org. The deadline to apply is April 13. Auditions will be held Saturday, April 21, in Parkersburg.

The scholarship fund that Dunphy’s family established this year also supports visits by Loh to instruct students in the Wood County Strings Program, and additional educational lectures in Wood County schools.
